First off we have last year’s smash hit THE INVISIBLE MAN, directed by Leigh Whannell and shot by Stefan Duscio. This film makes frequent use of negative space, framing lead actress Elisabeth Moss as though another subject is in the seemingly empty room with her, allowing the viewer’s imagination to fill in this invisible subject. A tremendous use of creative composition-alone to create fear and suspense. 

We’ve also got more than 300 new images from Gus Van Sant’s black comedy / thriller TO DIE FOR, shot by Eric Alan Edwards. While not one of Van Sant’s most well-known efforts, the film has developed its own cult following and in fact served as a major source of inspiration to director Emerald Fennell in making this year’s Promising Young Woman.

And finally we’ve got images from the 2019 horror film MIDSOMMAR, directed by Ari Aster and shot by Pawel Pogorzelski. Unlike most horror films that operate in the shadows, this film finds fear in the seemingly endless daylight of a remote Scandinavian village. The surreal graphic wide frames, reminiscent of Stanley Kubrick, that Aster uses to depict the ceremonies of the cult are a fantastic example of how bright, colorful, static images can be just as terrifying as the dark, desaturated, shaky handheld images that we most often associate with modern horror cinema.
